How old do you have to be to join?

Can anyone join Sahara?

We welcome people aged 55 and over and prioritise those with higher support needs. This may include people experiencing loneliness or social isolation, living with dementia, or facing mobility or other health challenges.
We do this so we can focus our limited resources on supporting those who need us most. When you complete the registration form, we will ask a few questions to help us understand your needs and ensure we can offer the right level of support.

I’m not South Asian but I am over 55. Can I join?

Yes. We welcome anyone aged 55+ who could benefit from our support. Our activities are culturally tailored, so some sessions may be more suited to South Asian communities.

What does it cost to join Sahara?

How do I join?

To join, please contact us at info@saharawellbeing.org.uk, call 07943 235088, or complete our Referral Form. We will have a short chat and then ask you to complete a brief registration form.

Question 6

My mother/ father is unable to get to you. Do you offer transport?

Accepted Answer

Transport depends on the availability of our volunteer drivers. While we try to support where possible, we are not always able to guarantee transport.

Question 7

My mother/ father has mobility issues and is concerned about joining your events. Can you do anything to help?

Accepted Answer

We aim to make our events as accessible as possible. We can offer a limited number of wheelchairs and a rollator for participants to use, and at events we can support with wheelchair transport from the drop-off point to the event space.
We are not able to provide personal care, including support with using the bathroom. For those with more significant mobility or care needs, we ask that they attend with a carer or family member.

My mother or father can't understand English.

At present, we are able to offer support and translation in Punjabi. Please get in touch with us to discuss your needs and we will do our best to help.

Question 9

I’m nervous about attending your event because I don’t know anyone there.

Accepted Answer

It’s completely normal to feel anxious about attending something new. We have friendly volunteers on hand to greet you and help you feel at home. You’re also welcome to get in touch before attending so we can have a chat and get to know each other.

Question 10

How many staff do you have?

We don’t have any paid staff. Sahara is entirely volunteer-led, with people giving their time to support the community.

Question 11

Who can volunteer with Sahara? What skills are needed?

Accepted Answer

You do not need specific qualifications or extensive experience to volunteer with us. We will support you to develop your skills and confidence in the role. What matters most is a genuine interest in making a positive difference, an understanding of the cultures we work with, and a commitment to your volunteer role.

All volunteers are required to complete an enhanced DBS check and take part in training sessions.
